Awkwardness

I’m seeking your advice,

Because I’m the social equivalent of a coke without ice:

What should you do when you don’t hear someone twice?

Take for example,

The following sample:

A stranger comes up to you in the street,

And gives you a friendly greet.

Not knowing what they said,

You stand there scratching your head.

After what feels like an eternity,

You reply: “Pardon me?”

Now there’s a loud noise in the background,

And their response is just a muffled sound.

This is when I feel it becomes a burden,

To ask them to repeat themselves again.

Do you run away,

To keep your nerves at bay,

Before they completely fray?

Or do you stay,

Having no idea what they’re trying to say,

But play it off like you do anyway?
